Martin/Horsfield Long/Dietrich Family History

James T. Martin II was born to John Robert Martin, Sr. and Grace Marie(Long) Martin, on January 15, 1956 in Flint, Michigan. I am the Michigander. The rest of the family, including my parents, were born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

My siblings are in descending chronological order, John R. Jr. (Jack), Francis George, Carl Henry, and Mary Grace.

My parents moved from Wilkes-Barre to Davison, Michigan in 1950 for employment opportunities. It was a rough struggle, from the poverty of a mined out coal town, to the relative prosperity of an emerging automobile town; Flint, Michigan. In all irony, the tide has turned and Flint is now a struggling automobile town.

My father was a “Jack (figuratively and literally) of all trades” and had worked doing everything from welding in the shipyards of New Jersey during WW II, to fixing the worlds largest shovel for the Blue Coal Company.  When John Robert Martin was born on June 26, 1911, in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, his father, James, was 38 and his mother, Alice, was 37. He married Grace Marie Long on July 3, 1936. They had five children in 18 years. He died on April 27, 1977, in Flint, Michigan, at the age of 65.

The Trailer

The Trailer

Jack (Hoot), with the assistance of Wilburt and Margaret Zirnhelt, who were life long family friends also from Wilkes-Barre, was able to secure employment with Buick Motor Division of General Motors. Initially, my family lived on the Zirnhelt’s land in Davison, in a small trailer. How four children and two adults fit into that little trailer is beyond me.

Eventually my parents were able to afford a small house, about a mile south of the Zirnhelt’s, at 4315 South State Road. From what I have been told, that first house was quite small, without running water, and no basement. This small first house was soon to be no more, when on May 12 of 1956, a tornado ripped through the area south of Davison and destroyed our house. Since there was no basement in the house, we made it over to our next door neighbors, the Tatro’s, just before the tornado hit. I was all of four months old, and have no conscious memory of this, only what I have been told. Needless to say, we were once again without a real home. Davison, at the time, was a small farming community, and our family had become acquainted through our church with the Spezia family. The Spezia’s had a farm on Atlas Road, which had a small tenant farmer’s house on it. We were able to live there while my family built a new house where the old house once stood.

My father and brothers built the house together, and that is where my mother and I stayed until three years or so after my father’s death in 1977. As they say, the rest is history.

The Martin’s

My father’s parents, the Martins, were born in Lancashire County, Rochdale England. James T. Martin, my grandfather, for whom I am named, once stated, ” I am a Scotsman, who had the misfortune of having been born in England.” He moved, in the early 1900’s to the U.S., settling in Wilkes-Barre. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Lucania

When James Thomas Martin was born on October 10, 1872, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, his father, John, was 39 and his mother, Helen, was 35. He married Alice Ann Horsfield and they had 12 children together. He then married Anna Heale and they had no children together. He died in 1970 in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, at the age of 98, and was buried in Shavertown, Pennsylvania.

His wife, Alice Horsfield, died when my father was quite young.

When Alice Ann Horsfield was born on November 16, 1873, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, her father, Charles William Horsfield was 19, and her mother, Mary Ellen Crossley, was 19. She married James Thomas Martin on December 26, 1896, in her hometown. They had 11 children in 17 years. My grandfather re-married after her death, resulting in my father having several siblings and step siblings. The Martin family remained a mystery to me, as I only knew two of my fathers many siblings, Aunt Jennie and Aunt Anna Waters, until becoming involved with Ancestry.com.  https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/56808920/family/familyview?cfpid=30015478106

Anna passed away at age 94.  Grandfather Martin married the mother of a boy he had saved from drowning, Annie Kehoe Heale.

Anna Heale was born in 1866 in New York. She married John C. Heale and they had six children together. She then married James Thomas Martin and they had no children together. She died in 1928 in Pennsylvania at the age of 62.

The boy, George Heale, had fallen through the ice of Darling Street Pond outside of the textile mill where James worked. He noticed the boy go through the ice and leaped down to the pond, rescuing him from the frozen water on January 27th, 1908. As the result of James heroic efforts, he was awarded the Carnegie Medal through the Carnegie Hero Fund, and one thousand dollars. With that money he was able to purchase the house where my father was raised, on 15 West Linden Street in Wilkes-Barre.

When George Paul Heale was born on May 13, 1898, in Falls, Pennsylvania, his father, John, was 39 and his mother, Annie, was 32. He married Iva M Dickinson on December 11, 1920 in Luzerne. He died in 1929 in Tarpon Springs, Florida, at the age of 31, and was buried in Shavertown, Pennsylvania.

Grandfather Martin adopted Alice Heale who was born in 1905 in Pennsylvania, her father, John, was 46, and her mother, Annie, was 43. She married Joseph C Sammon on August 19, 1926, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. They had two children during their marriage. She died on September 12, 1957, in Buffalo, New York, at the age of 52, and was buried in Shavertown, Pennsylvania.

When Jennie Lois Martin was born on December 12, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, her father, James, was 37, and her mother, Alice, was 36. She had six brothers and five sisters. She died on September 15, 1997, in her hometown at the age of 87, and was buried in Shavertown, Pennsylvania.

Jim’s Family History

This is a work in progress, and I hope to discover additional information and have corrections to current information as I continue. Eventually I would like to do a complete genealogy of the family. I am particularly interested in the Lang/König family history in Bavaria.

Dietrich Family History
Descendants of Ignatz Dietrick by Robert Ott

Generation No. 1

1. IGNATZ2 DIETRICK (MICHAEL1 DIETERICH) was born Abt. 1812 in Baden, Germany, and died Bef. 1889 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co. , Pennsylvania. He married (1) ?. He married (2) ELIZABETH Abt. 1859. She was born in Nassau, Germany, and died Aft. 1892.

When Ignatius Dietrich was born on February 2, 1812, in Oos, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, his father, Michael, was 42. He married Elizabeth Hochhalter and they had seven children together. They lived for a while in what was called the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia.

Early in its history, the location just outside Philadelphia allowed the area to thrive in manufacturing, as mills, breweries, leather tanneries, paints and chemical works, tool making factories, and iron and stove foundries once lined the neighborhood. It also holds the status as a famous red-light district in the United States. Prior to annexation, the township was created as a less densely populated alternative to nearby Philadelphia. Because of this, it was later known colloquially as “Philadelphia’s first suburb.” However, the Southwark neighborhood claims this distinction as well.

Artisan immigrants from Germany settled in the Northern Liberties in great numbers in the 19th century. In the first decades of the 20th century, the area saw an influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe.

He then married Elizabeth Schmidt and they had nine children together. He died on April 3, 1884, in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72, and was buried in Shavertown, Pennsylvania.
